Dawgs Sweep New Orleans Teams
Fisk 4-0 in 2024 after defeating Dillard and SUNO on consecutive days.
NASHVILLE – Head Coach Kenny Anderson has stressed how important it is to win at home. This week, his Fisk University Bulldogs (8-9, 5-3 GCAC) went 3-0 after sweeping Dillard University and Southern University of New Orleans on Friday and Saturday.
"We circled this week coming into 2024 because we have to make it tough to win at home," said Anderson. "It is hard to win in this conference wherever the game is. We have lost two home games already. This was a huge deal. Now we need to win some road games."
On Friday, the Dawgs were led by their dynamic duo of Jayden Lockett and Tyon Thompson both scoring 19 points. In his first game back after missing the last seven, leading scorer Blake Goodman chipped in 13 points off the bench. Lockett matched Michael Ashley with a team-high eight rebounds in the 70-67 win over Dillard.
It looked like Fisk would cruise to a win when Goodman converted a free throw giving his team a 55-43 lead with 10:26 left in regulation. Dillard chipped away and then went on a 6-1 run to cut the lead to a point at 66-65. Thompson's jumper with 18 seconds left. After a Dillard turnover, Lockett salted the game away with two free throws.
Saturday's game was tougher than the final score indicated. Four Dawgs scored in double-figures as Fisk defeated SUNO 86-76. GCAC Player of the Year candidate of SUNO Jamal Gibson was as spectacular as advertised, leading all scorers and rebounders going 25 and 24 but it was not enough.
Thompson led Fisk with 22 points, Lockett had 21 points and filled the scorebook by grabbing five rebounds, dishing out six assists, and had five steals and four blocks. Ashley had a double-double of 13 points and 16 rebounds. Rod Wiley had ten points and six helpers.
SUNO controlled the middle until late in the first half, leading by as many as ten points before going into the locker room with a six-point lead. After a SUNO basket at the 15:24 mark, made the score 55-46, the Dawgs finally woke up, scoring 16 of the next 17 points to go up 62-56 and never looked back. Fisk continued their hot run taking their biggest lead on a Lockett three-pointer on an assist from Thompson, making the score 81-65. The Dawgs held SUNO off the rest of the way to get the win.
