Fisk Bulldogs Edge Wilberforce in Nail-Biter
Dawgs get hard fought victory on #BeLikeDre Night
NASHVILLE – On a night that the University honored former Fisk men's basketball player Andre Bell, Nicholas Beaird-Kennard led the Fisk University Bulldogs with 17 points, while Kaleb Jeffries, the HBCUAC Offensive and Freshman of the Week, contributed 14 points in a hard-fought 62-59 victory over Wilberforce University in a HBCUAC East Division matchup held in Nashville in front of a standing room only crowd.
Despite being the top scoring team in the conference, Fisk recorded its second lowest point total against an NAIA opponent this season, underscoring the tightly contested nature of the game. The tension remained high throughout, as missed free throws in the closing moments kept the score close. With Wilberforce holding a 59-58 lead, Mark Cooper stepped up, scoring on a driving layup with 1:40 remaining. Cooper finished the game with 11 points and ten rebounds.
In the final seconds, Beaird-Kennard made a crucial defensive play, stealing the ball with 19 seconds left and drawing a foul. Although he missed both free throws, teammate Simeon Williams II secured the rebound, giving Beaird-Kennard another opportunity at the line. This time, he converted both free throws. Wilberforce attempted a three-point shot but missed, and Williams II grabbed his 12th rebound. Lucious Jackson was fouled and missed two free throws, after which Wilberforce turned the ball over at midcourt. Fisk then struggled to inbound the ball, allowing Wilberforce one last chance to tie the game. Wilberforce managed a good look at the basket but could not score, securing the win for Fisk.
"We didn't shoot the ball well, but was able to get the win," said Fisk head coach Jeremiah Crutcher. "We told our guys two weeks ago that the playoffs start now. This is the type of game that we will see in the postseason. Wilberforce makes it tough on you. I'm glad that we got out here with a win."
