Big Night From Buckhanon Gives Lady Bulldogs Win Over Rival Lane
Lady Bulldogs committed 31 turnovers but dished out 18 assists to get the win over HBCU for Lane.
NASHVILLE - Playing with a lower-body injury, Fisk University Lady Bulldog post Maya Buckhanon (30 points and 15 rebounds) got her second double-double in as many games in her team's 63-56 win over the Lne College Lady Dragons in non-conference play from the Henderson A. Johnson Arena. The Lady Bulldogs (2-2) were without Kierra Fulton for the game and lost Laila Eliotti in the fourth quarter. Transfer Jayla Bibbs picked up the slack, helping Buckhanon on the boards with 12. Zipporah Davis chipped in 13 points.
"We had to hold on at the end, but I was happy about how we played on the defensive end," said Fisk head coach Victoria Crawford. 'Games like this prepare you for down the road. We were sloppy, but we can correct that. We have one more game before we start conference play. We will get it right."
The sloppiness came from the Lady Bulldogs committing 31 turnovers for the game. Lane press bothered them in the fourth quarter, spurring them to get back in the game. After Fisk scored the first 14 points of the third quarter and outscored Lane 18-8 for the quarter, it looked as if they would have the victory in the bag. Lane went on a 17-6 run before the fourth-quarter media timeout to cut the lead to 51-49. After the break, A'Niya Young made three crucial plays to give Fisk some cushion. Young made a beautiful high-low pass to Buckhonon for an assist. She then scored on a basket from Bibbs. After that, her steal set up another Buckhanon basket from Davis. Young's assist to Buckhanon at 1:47 to go in regulation gave Fisk a nine-point lead that virtually sealed the deal.
"Coach (Crawford) wanted someone to step up with all of the injuries we are dealing with," said Young. "I pride myself on doing the little things to help my team win. All that matters to me is to win. They came back on us really quickly, so we all had to do our part."
The Lady Bulldogs shared the ball well, getting 18 assists on their 22 made baskets. Fisk is 2-0 against HBCU schools. They will now get ready to take on UT-Southern at home at 1 p.m. on Wednesday before taking their Thanksgiving break.
