Buckhanon Earns GCAC Player of the Week
2022-23 NAIA All-American goes for 30 points and 15 rebounds to earn Gulf Coast Athletic Conference weekly honor.
NEW ORLEANS, La. --Maya Buckhanon carried her team on her back, leading the Fisk University Lady Bulldogs to a victory over NCAA D2 Lane College. Her 30-point, 15-rebound effort was not easy because of a lower-body injury she was nursing. Her play earned her the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference's Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors. Fisk (2-2) is 2-0 in games she has played. In those games, she is averaging 28.5 points per game and 13.5 rebounds. Last year, she dominated all season and was named GCAC Most Valuable and Defensive Player of the Year. She is off to a fast start in defending those titles.
"All I care about is the team winning," said Buckhanon. I won this award a lot last year, but we didn't win the title. I am grateful to win this, but I have high team goals. During Homecoming, the alumni kept reminding us how long it had been since we won a conference title."
The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action this Wednesday when they host UT Southern.
