Lady Dawgs Outlast Wiley
Maya Buckhanon, A'Niya Young and Jayla Bibbs record double-doubles. Courtney Lumpkins scores ten in her debut in the road win.
MARSHALL, Texas -- Maya Buckhanon scored 15 of her game-high 19 points, leading four Lady Bulldogs in double figures, as the Fisk University Lady Bulldogs (12-6, 9-1 GCAC) defeated the Wiley University Lady Wildcats (11-8, 6-5 GCAC) 62-53 in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action from Wiley. Buckhanon, who was in foul trouble in the first half, received great support from A'Niya Young, who had 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, Jayla Bibbs' 10 points and 13 rebounds, and Courtney Lumpkins who chipped in with 10 points in her first game in a Fisk uniform.
"We knew going in that this game wouldn't be easy," said Fisk Head Coach Victoria Crawford. "Winning on the road is good but the way we played concerned me. We were lucky to be tied at the half. Wiley played well. We have to play better."
After a low-scoring 24-24 halftime, Wiley scored the first five points of the third quarter. After Wiley made the score 31-26, the Lady Dawgs went to work, scoring the next 13 points to take a 39-31 lead. Buckanon and Mya Robinson both made tough three-point plays to key the run. With 8:49 left in regulation, a Young and one on an assist from Buckhanon gave Fisk a 46-36 lead. Wiley cut the lead to three with 6:21 left on a three-point basket from Ashunti Cooper but couldn't get any closer.
The victory was the ninth GCAC win in a row for Fisk, who sits tied for first with Rust College at 9-1 in conference play. Rust holds the lead by virtue of their win over Fisk in December.
