Buckhanon Wins Eighth GCAC Weekly Honor
Record night against SUNO earns Maya Buckhanon GCAC Player of the Week.
NEW ORLEANS - For a little over a month, Fisk University power forward Maya Buckhanon has been struggling on the court. A trip to New Orleans must have been the push she needed as she scored a combined 97 points and 31 rebounds in two games to earn the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors. It was the eighth time this seasone that she has won the award, but the first time since January 15.
On Thurday, Buckhanon scored a season-high 37 points and 12 rebounds in the 68-62 win at Dillard. She followed that up with a Fisk school record for men and women 60 points and grabbed 19 rebounds. The 60 points was two points short of the NAIA record by Miriam Walker of Claflin (SC) University in 1988. The record was previously held by current Fisk Golf Head Coach Robert Moore who had 55 points. In the second quarter of the game, Buckhanon scored her 1,000th career point in only two sesons at Fisk.
"I didn't know that I scored my 1,000th when I did. I was shocked," said Buckhanon. "I also didn't know that I had the school record. I love Coach Moore but I told him before I left that I was coming for his record. I am glad that we won though. I hope that we can keep it up."
Buckhanon and teo of her teammates will be honored on Thursday for Senior Night
