Branch Drops 40 Points in Road Win Over Dillard
NEW ORLEANS - Freshman Ari Branch delivered an unforgettable performance, pouring in 40 points as the Fisk University Lady Bulldogs powered past Dillard University 98-70 in nonconference action in New Orleans. Branch's 40-point outburst stands as the highest single-game total by a Fisk freshman women's basketball player since Charlane Malone's 42 in 1979, stamping her name in Lady Bulldogs history. Senior Dee Scott was a dominant force in the paint, notching a double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds. The 98 points were the most by Fisk women's basketball since 1980.
"We are starting to play well but still have room to grow," said head coach Victoria Crawford. "Scoring 98 points is good, but we need to continue to play well on defense. We started fast and kept it at our tempo. This was a good test for the upcoming tournament."
Fisk set the tone early, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead and never relinquishing control. Both squads battled shorthanded, with Dillard dressing only five players—one of whom fouled out in the fourth quarter, further depleting their roster. Sophomore Kayla Lee once again showcased her two-way excellence, tallying 16 points and swiping seven steals in just 27 minutes of play. Classmate Teniya Williams contributed 11 points and nine boards, while junior Kennedi Wagner orchestrated the offense with eight assists.
The Lady Bulldogs' tenacious defense forced 23 turnovers and limited themselves to only ten giveaways, their lowest total of the season. This dominant win gives Fisk momentum as they continue their challenging road swing in New Orleans against Southern University of New Orleans and prepare for the upcoming road matchup against Simmons College on Tuesday. The team's depth, resilience, and star power were on full display, signaling that the Lady Dawgs are rounding into form as postseason play draws near.
