Lady Dawgs Battle Rust in Regular Season Finale
HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. - Despite strong individual performances, the Fisk University Lady Bulldogs (8-17, 2-10 HBCUAC) were unable to overcome the Rust College Bearcats 15-10, 9-2), falling 88-83 in their final regular season game in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Sophomores Kayla Lee and Teniya Williams led the scoring for Fisk, each contributing 18 points. Freshman Ari Branch also made a significant impact with 16 points, while senior Dee Scott recorded a double-double, finishing with 15 points and ten rebounds.
After Rust ran out to a 26-15 first quarter lead, Fisk chipped away and finally took a 37-36 lead with 1:55 left in the first half. Rust then went on a 6-0 run to close the half. Lee committed two fouls to end the period to put her in foul trouble.
The third quarter was all Rust, as they went up by as many as 14 points. In the final stanza, the Lady Bulldogs chipped away and were able to cut the lead to four on a Williams driving layup with 4:05 left. Rust held on for the win.
Although the Lady Bulldogs fought hard throughout the contest and showcased their talent, the loss marks their fourth consecutive defeat. The team faced a determined Rust squad and ultimately came up just short in a closely contested matchup. As the regular season concludes, the Lady Dawgs will look to regroup and refocus heading into postseason play.
