Fisk Volleyball Defeats Freed Hardeman in Five Set Classic
NASHVILLE (September 30, 2025) - HBCUAC Newcomer of the Week Shelby Chamblin and Laila Esters smashed 15 kills apiece to lead the Fisk University Lady Bulldogs (16-5) to a 3-2 victory over Freed Hardeman (22-25, 29-27, 25-14, 21-25, and 15-9). The win gives Fisk a season sweep over FHU, marking the first two victories over their West Tennessee counterparts in school history. The HBCUAC Setter of the Week, Kaia Barnett was outstanding again, quarterbacking the offense with 35 assists. In the pivotal second set, Fisk was energized by a raucous student section, fueling a comeback that set the tone for the remainder of the match.
This thrilling win not only highlights the impact of emerging stars like Chamblin and Esters but also showcases the depth and resilience of the Lady Bulldogs' roster. Freshman Morgan Walters came in late in the third set to serve the final six points, making it tough on FHU, who had four errors, with Walters getting the 24th point on an ace. Fisk dominated the set, swinging at a .421percent clip, while forcing FHU to -.158.
On the defensive end, Nialah Gupton and Reagan Jones both had 17 digs, while Delaney Farver rejected seven total shots.
The Lady Bulldogs finished the month of September winning ten of the 11 matches, seven of which were in straight sets. As Fisk continues to build momentum, the team's ability to thrive under pressure and make history has set a new standard for the program.
