Epic Battle Ends in Lady Bulldogs Victory
SHREVEPORT, LA. - For the second season in a row, the Fisk University Lady Bulldogs had to play five sets to advance to the HBCUAC Semifinals. This year, they showcased their resilience and depth in a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over a valiant Paul Quinn team. In a match filled with twists and momentum shifts, Fisk rallied behind a balanced offensive attack and clutch performances from both veterans and rising stars.
Laila Esters Leads Balanced Attack
Laila Esters paced the Lady Dawgs with 14 kills, leading a well-rounded attack that kept the Paul Quinn defense on their toes. Setter Kaia Barnett orchestrated the offense brilliantly, distributing 29 assists and ensuring the Bulldogs maintained offensive rhythm throughout the match.
Paul Quinn Defense Challenges Stars
Paul Quinn's game plan focused on containing Fisk's standout outside hitters, Shelby Chamblin (2025 Conference Player of the Year) and Reagan Jones (2024 Conference Player of the Year). Their relentless defensive pressure forced the duo into a combined 16 attack errors. Despite this, Jones managed to post 11 kills, while Chamblin contributed a versatile performance, notching 10 kills and a team-high 12 digs.
Turning Point: Dominant Fourth Set
Down two sets to one and facing elimination, the Lady Bulldogs appeared on the ropes. However, they responded emphatically in the fourth set, hitting at an impressive .345 percentage and limiting Paul Quinn to just 12 points. Senior Nialah Gupton was instrumental in protecting the back row. Her 12 digs tied for the team lead, but it was her leadership that got Fisk back on track. This dominant display shifted the momentum firmly in Fisk's favor and set the stage for a decisive fifth set.
Freshman Delivers in the Clutch
Freshman Chennille McClelland rose to the occasion in the final set, delivering two crucial kills late in the frame, including the match-winner. Her composure under pressure highlighted the depth of the Lady Bulldogs roster, as contributions came from every corner of the lineup.
Coach Enderle Praises Team Depth
Reflecting on the victory, Head Coach Jess Enderle emphasized the importance of resilience and collective effort: "When you are the top seed, people give their best shot. We knew coming in that Paul Quinn was well-coached and a good team. That fourth set gave us the momentum we needed to pull us through. Chenni, and Kaidence (Morton) really stepped up. We needed them to pick up the slack."
Looking Ahead
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs advance to the conference semifinals, carrying confidence and valuable experience from an instant classic. As they prepare for the next challenge, the entire squad will look to build on the grit and teamwork that defined this remarkable comeback.
